Is this what Apple’s foldable iPhone will look like?

Unlike many of its competitors like Samsung and Huawei, Apple hasn’t released a foldable phone yet, despite rumors that it is working on one.

Now, YouTubers in China have created an impressive prototype that shows an iPhone that folds with a center hinge in the screen.

The prototype, called the iPhone V, was designed by engineers using the iPhone X and the folding mechanism from Motorola Razr.

The iPhone V, which took over 200 days and thousands of dollars to make, also has silver iPhone lettering on the hinge and the iconic Apple icon on the back.

Of the world’s seven largest smartphone manufacturers, six have already offered foldable screens – Samsung, Motorola, Huawei, Oppo, Xiaomi and Vivo – but the seventh, Apple, hasn’t.

The Chinese YouTube channel Technological Aesthetics posted the video detailing the arduous, months-long task of building the device.

“It took more than 200 days of effort, and at great cost,” said Na Yan of technological esthetics. “In the coming days, we want to continue improving the foldable iPhone.”

Overall, the iPhone V looks similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, which flips like an old phone from the ’90s thanks to a horizontal hinge in the middle of the screen.

But the team used the iPhone X, an already five-year-old iPhone model, to turn it into a modern-looking phone running iOS 16.

Engineers used the phone’s OLED display, which is just as flexible, even though it’s covered with a tough outer glass in iPhones.

The team also rearranged the internal components of the iPhone X to be able to fold and borrowed the foldable hub chassis from Motorola Razr, though they considered using the mechanism from the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip.

The engineers admit that the result was a somewhat “rudimentary prototype”, with many problems that became apparent after limited periods of use.

For example, there are gaps when folded, and after a few days of use there are creases and horizontal bubbles under the screen that “cannot be fixed”.

What’s more, if it is completely shut down, the entire screen is irreversibly damaged.

It also uses a 1,000mAh battery compared to the 4,352mAh battery in the iPhone 13 Pro Max, so it barely lasts a day.

However, overall, the team claims to have technically created “the world’s first foldable iPhone,” potentially years before Apple officially launched.

It appears that Apple has patented a foldable phone, similar to a foldable phone, with a horizontal hinge in the middle.

In 2019, Apple filed a patent showing what appears to be a foldable phone. In the patent, the device can be seen closed, foldable, similar to a foldable phone, via a hinge in the middle

But those requests were made years ago, and Apple’s recent iPhone models don’t have design features that suggest it’s going down the foldable path anytime soon.

Ben Wood, an analyst at CCS Insight, previously said there’s “really no need” for Apple to move in the foldable direction right now.

“You can be sure that they’ve had flexible display technology in their labs for the past decade,” he told MailOnline.

“But right now, there is no business necessity for Apple to take the risk of being in a niche market when the iPhone is incredibly successful.”

Rival Samsung released its latest generation of foldable phones – the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 – in August.

Meanwhile, Motorola released the second generation Motorola Razr in China this year and is in the process of rolling it out across Europe.

Motorola took inspiration from the original Razr ‘clamshell’ flip to create a pocket-sized flip phone that folds down a horizontal crease.

Meanwhile, the recently released Huawei Mate X2 features a dual-screen design very similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2.

Samsung revealed the GALAXY FLIP 4 and GALAXY FOLD 4 at their unboxed event – prices go up to £2019

Samsung has launched two new foldable phones with flexible glass that folds down the middle of the screen, including the most expensive device to date.

The Korean tech giant lifted the lid on several new products at its Unpacked event on August 10, including the Galaxy Z Fold 4.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 comes with a new taskbar along the bottom of the phone, providing a “PC-like experience” where users can easily see their apps.

It comes with up to 1TB of storage – but for £2019.

Samsung also launched the Galaxy Z Flip 4, which opens up like an old phone from the ’90s thanks to a horizontal hinge in the middle of the screen.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 starts at £999 for 125GB of storage and goes up to £1,199 for 512GB of storage.

The main screen of the Flip 4 is 6.7 inches, while the smaller cover screen on the outside is 1.9 inches, like last year’s Flip 3.

The Galaxy Flip 4 also includes a 65 percent brighter sensor for better photos, the ability to take selfies when closed and an increased battery size.

The Flip 4 is available in either Graphite, Bora Purple, Pink Gold or Blue, while the Fold 4 comes in Phantom Black, Green Gray or Beige.

Both smartphone models are 5G compatible, come with IPX8 water resistance and can be folded and unlocked more than 200,000 times.

The Flip 4 and Fold 4 are “almost indistinguishable from their predecessors for most consumers,” said James Manning Smith, chief analyst at CCS Insight.

“While Samsung may be criticized for this, it makes sense to take an iterative approach given that foldable devices are currently such a small segment of the overall smartphone market,” he said.

“In most cases, a consumer who buys a new Samsung device will get one for the first time, so they won’t really have anything to compare it to.”

Samsung’s original foldable device – the Galaxy Fold – had taken years from making its initial idea and patent stages.

It was released in September 2019, after technical issues that held back its worldwide launch, including reports of broken screens after a few days of use.

The first generation Galaxy Z Flip was released in February 2020, although it was replaced six months later by a 5G compatible version.

The main competitors in smartphones of Samsung – Apple and Google – have not yet launched a foldable device.
