More dry shampoos found to contain cancer chemical

Seven out of 10 dry shampoos still on grocery store shelves contain detectable levels of a cancer-causing chemical — despite the recent recalls of dozens of popular brands.

Research by a lab in Connecticut tested a random sample of 148 different products sold at CVS, Walgreens, and online retailers like Amazon across the country.

About 70 percent tested positive for benzene, a known carcinogen closely linked to leukemia and other blood disorders. Among those that contained the chemical were drugstore favorites Batiste and Not Your Mother’s—along with premium brands Pureology and Kerastase.

Gasoline levels varied across bottles, but nine were found to contain at least 10 times the legal limit. One product—Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Texturizing Coconut—had nearly 80 times the threshold.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates cosmetics and makeup, told today that it is reviewing the findings.

Contamination may come from inactive petroleum-derived ingredients, a thickening agent, or isobutane, a propellant spray.

Manufacturers including Church & Dwight — which makes Batiste — refuted the findings, saying it recently confirmed with its suppliers that dry shampoo does not contain gasoline.

It comes after millions of bottles of Dove, TRESemme and Bed Head dry shampoo were recalled across America last week after they were found to contain gasoline.

People who bought the shampoo were urged to stop using it and visit Unilever – the group that made it – for a full refund.

Valisher Lab, an independent Connecticut lab that performed the tests, contacted the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ask them to issue a trademark recall. Benzene is at the top of the Food and Drug Administration’s list of hazardous solvents.

It is a “Class 1” solvent that “should not be used in the manufacture of pharmaceutical substances, excipients and medicinal products due to its unacceptable toxicity”.

Inhaling or absorbing the chemical over a long period of time can have devastating health effects because it causes the cells in the body to function incorrectly.

Excessive exposure to benzene can also cause the bone marrow to not produce enough red blood cells, which can lead to anemia and leukemia.

It can also wreak havoc on the immune system by altering antibody levels in the blood and killing white blood cells.

Short-term inhalation of a high concentration of benzene can lead to a myriad of negative effects such as dizziness, headache, irregular heartbeat, and in some severe circumstances, death.

The American Cancer Society says it increases a person’s risk of developing cancer.

Benzene belongs to a class of chemicals called volatile organic compounds, which evaporate into the air.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says it is the responsibility of manufacturers to monitor the levels of benzene in their products.

Allows a trace level of up to 2 parts per million (ppm) in products.

But the Environmental Protection Agency warns that inhaling just 0.4 parts per million of benzene increases your risk, resulting in one additional cancer case for every 100,000 people.

A recent investigation, which was conducted by Valisure and published online, found the presence of benzene in most of the dry shampoo products tested.

An independent lab bought dry shampoo from drugstores across the US and then took it for testing.

The researchers said the tests were conducted over a period of several months.

The amount of gasoline in products differed by spraying and even bottles of the same brand – to those in which it was discovered.

They said the investigation found “the highest levels of benzene that have been widely detected to date”.

A total of thirty percent of those examined did not have gasoline – including bottles of L’Oreal, Philosophy and American Crew.

But it was found that the vast majority contain a carcinogen.

For nine of the products tested, benzene levels were more than 10 times the recommended limit.

Seven of those were from Not Your Mother, under the names: Toasted Coconut, Clean Freak Original, Clean Freak Unscented, Triple Threat Brunette, Plump for Joy Body Building Orange, Clean and Refresh and Blonde Moment.

The other two are Paul Mithcell Invisiblewear Brunette and Sun Bum Beach Formula.

Tests also revealed discrepancies in gasoline levels within the same product, which Valischur said indicated inconsistent mixing methods.

For example, one bottle of Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Toasted Coconut has 79 times the recommended level in the first spray but 61 times in the second.

Valisure CEO David Light said the results should be a ’cause for major concern’ because the products are likely to be used indoors, where gasoline may remain ‘long and be inhaled’ for extended periods of time.

He added: ‘This and other issues identified by Valisure, including detection of benzene in body spray, hand sanitizer and sunscreen products, strongly emphasize the importance of independent testing and the need to better integrate it into an increasingly complex and fragile global supply chain. “.

Asked about the results, Light told CBS Moneywatch: “Thirty percent contains no detectable amount of benzene, so it can be made cleanly.

“There is definitely a greater risk right now with aerosol propellant sprays.”

In a statement to, the Food and Drug Administration said: “Manufacturers are responsible for the safety and quality of their products.

The Food and Drug Administration encourages companies and retailers to remove their products from store shelves and online markets when benzene is detected. Consumers should immediately discontinue use of any drugs and cosmetics that have been withdrawn.

Maker Batiste Church & Dwight has suggested it has no plans to issue a recall at this point.

A spokesperson told CBS it is evaluating the report at the center of recent allegations.

When it was reported that propellants were the source of gasoline in products recalled by competitors, we contacted the fuel suppliers and confirmed with these suppliers that the propellants used in Batiste products did not contain gasoline.

DeMert, the manufacturer of Not Your Mother, said the report “is inconsistent with data provided by our suppliers and the ongoing stringent testing to ensure the safety and integrity of our products.

“These tests do not show any traceable amount of gasoline.”

It comes after Unilever – behind brands including Dove, Nexxus and TRESemme – recalled 1.5 million products because they contained elevated levels of gasoline.

The affected merchandise are aerosols made before October 2021 from the Dove, Nexxus, Suave, and TRESemme brands.

Petrol dry shampoo that has already been recalled

More than a million bottles of dry shampoo have already been recalled for containing gasoline.

The FDA requested the recall after tests revealed it contained a carcinogen.

It can end up in products as contaminants in the fuel used to ensure the liquid is released from the bottles quickly.
