- Now under Microsoft and Xbox, Bethesda has been busy working on Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI, which makes the prospect of a new Fallout game very slim in the near future.

Fallout is a legendary post-apocalyptic RPG series currently being run by Bethesda and ZeniMax, who are now part of Xbox following the 2021 acquisition. The studio is working on Starfield and Elder Scrolls VI, among other projects, leaving Fallout fans desperate even with hope. Mysterious about getting a new Fallout game within the next decade. As Todd Howard’s Bethesda becomes increasingly constrained, fans are wondering if another Xbox studio will take on the task.
Fallout New Vegas was built by Obsidian Entertainment, more recently The Outer Worlds and Grounded. Fallout New Vegas, buggy at launch, is widely seen as one of the best in the entire franchise, with Obsidian’s signature wit and keen interest in player agency.
Fans were hoping Years Obsidian may take charge of Fallout again, hoping the team will provide a spiritual or direct sequel to Fallout New Vegas. During Fallout’s 25th Anniversary Celebrations, Obsidian joked on twitter that “the board was too full” to work on the franchise, in response to all petitions. However, a new interview (via DualShockers) offers some new hope for New Vegas followers.
Studio head Feargus Urquhart offered some clarification on Obsidian’s stance on Fallout, confirming that they “love” making another Fallout game. The catch is that it will need to align with Bethesda’s wishes, development timelines, and other logistics.
“Of course, if we get the chance to do another Fallout, we’ll make it. There’s not even a question of whether we’ll do it or not, it’s just ‘Will the opportunity arise?’ […] I’ve been on Interplay for an extra year probably because I wanted to work on Fallout more. I love fallout.”
“At some point we’ll start looking at what those upcoming games are going to be, and I’d be surprised if Fallout isn’t on that list. […] If we’re going to do Fallout, it has to relate to what Bethesda is doing with Fallout and many other things, but I always personally say my hope is that before I ride into the sunset, I’d like to do another Fallout game.”
Considering both Obsidian and Bethesda now find themselves under Microsoft’s roof, the odds for Obsidian’s new Fallout game have never been higher. The fact that Microsoft bought one of the industry’s most fabled IPs in Fallout and didn’t actually commit to a new major project is strange at best.
As a Fallout fan, I hope that in a perfect world, we’d have a studio entirely dedicated to developing new Fallout games using the latest Bethesda technology that powers the upcoming space opera RPG Starfield.
