Salman Rushdie’s agent said Salman Rushdie lost his sight and used one of his hands after he was repeatedly stabbed during a literary event in upstate New York two months ago.
The 75-year-old author, whose 1988 novel The Satanic Verses forced him into hiding amid calls to be killed, was stabbed in the neck and torso while walking on stage to deliver a speech at the Chautauqua Institute on August 12. .
But the full extent of his injuries was not revealed until Saturday, when his agent Andrew Wylie gave an update on his condition in an interview with Spanish newspaper El País.
“[His wounds] It was deep, but it [also] Willie said. He sustained three serious injuries to his neck. One hand is helpless due to a nerve cut in his arm. He has about 15 other injuries to his chest and torso. Therefore, it was a brutal attack.”
The agent declined to say if Rushdie was still being treated in hospital, but said the important thing was that the world-renowned author would survive.
Wylie added that the possibility of an attack was something they had in mind.
I think the attack may have been something Salman and I have discussed in the past, which is that the main danger he faced after many years of imposing the fatwa was from a random person coming out of nowhere and attacking [him]Willie said.
“So, you can’t protect against it because it is completely unexpected and illogical. It was like the murder of John Lennon.”
Hadi Matar, the 24-year-old New Jersey resident who was arrested in the Rushdie stabbing, has pleaded not guilty to the charges of attempted murder and second-degree assault in August.
New York State Police said Rushdie was about to begin his scheduled lecture when Matar charged the platform with a knife in his hand, stabbing the British author in the neck and torso.
Rushdie spent nearly a decade in hiding after The Satanic Verses was published, angering some who called the novel blasphemous. Ayatollah Khomeini, the Iranian leader, issued a fatwa known as the fatwa, calling on Muslims to kill Rushdie, a year after the book was published.
