The change was in the air as the crown She wrapped up her penultimate season… and she was more of a relationship-changing with her.
The Season 5 finale begins with Dodi Al Fayed telling his father, Mohamed, of a house he wants to buy in Malibu. (He has to act fast, “Or I’ll lose him to Michael Douglas.”) He also wants to introduce his father to his new girlfriend…which is not Diana. Until now. She’s busy phoning a program to vote “no” for the preservation of the British monarchy and gossip to herself. Elsewhere, Tony Blair and Labor are preparing to sweep Parliament, and the British colony of Hong Kong is due to be returned to the Chinese, so times are changing. The Queen sees the delivery as inappropriate, so she sends Charles to represent her in Hong Kong as she heads to Canada.
Dodi brings his girlfriend, actress Kelly Fisher, to London on a private plane to meet Mohammed, but is unmoved: “Isn’t it enough just to stalk her?” (They speak Arabic, leaving Kelly and Mohammed’s wife out of the loop.) Mohammed also scolds Dodi for making him finance a series of Hollywood films, telling him, “The only thing you have talent for are women.” He still thinks Dodi can hit the “jackpot” there, though. (hmmm). Tony Blair and Labor won big on election night, John Major gracefully stepped down, telling Elizabeth he would do what he could to save Britannia, although the Labor Party is obligated and determined to remove it from service. (Allegorical alert!)
In her first meeting with Blair, Elizabeth posed a file BritanniaBut Blair has a better idea: a brand-new, privately funded yacht that the government can charter. suggest name New BritainWhich Charles loves, of course. But Elizabeth would rather not own a yacht at all, so Charles’ trip to Hong Kong would be a trip BritanniaThe last flight. He was even forced to fly there in business class (gasping!) while Blair and his classmates laughed. Back in London, Muhammad saw Diana sitting alone at the ballet and invited her to join him and his wife for dinner. She admits she’s “more depressing than ever” after the divorce and doesn’t want to be around for Camilla’s birthday, which will come right away. So Muhammad invited her to bring her children and come with him and his family to Saint-Tropez. He even got a big shiny new yacht!
In Hong Kong, Charles gave a speech commemorating the handover to the Chinese – and pulled Tony Blair aside for a private conversation afterwards. Blair apologizes to Britain, but Charles waves it: “There’s no point in clinging to the past.” In fact, he believes, “the royal family needs a similar revamp.” He gets annoyed with the restrictions his family has placed on him, especially about getting married again. Elizabeth realizes this and confronts her son, asserting that she does not approve of his marriage to Camilla. I’ve been given the rank of sovereign…”which I will one day become me,” Charles notes. Elizabeth replies, “One day, but not yet.” He describes its values as old-fashioned and fears that “the world will go on, and those who come after you will leave nothing behind.”
While Elizabeth takes one last, sad tour of the Britannia Before it’s canceled, Dodi suggests Kelly and Diana pack up for a trip to Saint-Tropez, where Mohammed enjoys life aboard his shiny new yacht.
