iOS 16 introduced a new haptic feedback option for the virtual keyboard. When enabled, the iPhone makes a slight vibration after each key is tapped as you type, providing physical confirmation of the key being pressed. This feature is a useful addition to the iPhone, but keep in mind that Apple says it can affect battery life.

“Turning on keyboard touches may affect the battery life of your iPhone,” Apple says, in a support document published last week. Apple doesn’t provide any additional details, so it’s not clear exactly how much battery life the feature is using. Note that Low Power Mode does not disable haptic feedback, so the only option for users concerned about the potential impact on battery life is to keep the feature turned off.

Obviously, any software feature on the iPhone consumes battery life, but Apple felt it was worth mentioning explicitly for the haptic feedback.

To enable keyboard haptic feedback, open the Settings app, tap Sounds & Touches → Keyboard Feedback, and turn on Haptic. The switch itself can be used to turn the feature off at any time. The feature is available on iPhone 8 and later running iOS 16 or later and uses the Taptic Engine inside iPhones.
