Gough spoke with ScreenRant alongside Kyle Soler, who plays Cyril Karn, on the series telling the outlet, “Dedra, when we meet her she’s been working at ISB and she’s very proud to do so, but she’s surrounded by what she considers mostly incompetent men. Well, Not all men really are. They seem to have lost what you could see.”

Goff continued, “I think Deedra is very ambitious. So I don’t think you could have thought of that if Deedra had used her powers for good. I don’t think she would have gone that route at all.”

“It wants to be part of the most powerful organization in the world, so the way to do that is to prove yourself by doing something that no one else does which is to catch up with Cassian Andor. Or at least put it all together so you can make ISB really aware of that person” .

Gough then went back to comment on the men her character surrounds her with, “She’s surrounded by laziness, flabby, corner-cutting boys. And she doesn’t like it. So she’ll rise through the ranks at any cost to anyone else.”

She went on to say, “I also think what I love is that what really goes against Dedra is that it’s a new thing, isn’t it being a woman in this world in that part. So me and part of you know that for a lot of women watching that, they’re going to be like, ‘Oh my God! Go sister! You’re doing well. Then you have to remember, ‘Oh!’ It’s fascism.”

Gough concluded, “So on the one hand you kind of want a woman to succeed in the man’s world, but it’s not, it’s the wrong world though. We don’t want that. It should make you feel somewhat uncomfortable with your alliances.”

In the Andor A production summary provided by Lucasfilm, the company describes Gough’s character as “an ambitious supervisor with the Imperial Security Bureau (ISB) who is looking for Cassian Andor and will stop at nothing to achieve her goal.”

Tony Gilroy, the show’s creator, notes, “She’s a true believer. She’s really a strong supporter of the ISB; she’s relentless. She’s inspirational. She has deep insights into what the rebels might think and what they might do next, anticipating their behavior.”

As Toby Haynes, show director for the first three episodes as well as eight, nine and ten episodes, added, “ISB is the worst ever. They have their spies everywhere, they listen to everyone and they piece all the pieces together. Deidra struggles her way through this organization that dominates The males take on a pivotal role. She is ruthless, extremely intelligent and relentless.”

Goff also reiterated her comments to ScreenRant, “She would do anything for the cause and often, she would look around and feel that a lot of her colleagues were too humble… To me, though she stands by the bad guys, she’s also evangelical in her belief in Empire And she, in common with all great villains, has this absolute belief that whatever she does is right, no matter what she does – and she does some deeply reprehensible things.”

Gough explained that the show would also touch on gender politics in a previous interview with Total Film, and even noted that it was “really relevant” to the show.

She told the outlet, “As a woman, in this world, to get ahead in any way, you have to be ten times better than anyone else in that room. And I felt that was really relevant to everything we’re going through right now.”
