Under Elon Musk, Twitter ‘takes child exploitation seriously’

The platform’s harshest critics of child sexual exploitation (CSE) said Twitter “takes child exploitation very seriously.” Teslarati In an exclusive interview.

Eliza Blue is a survivor of human trafficking and an advocate for victims, especially children. Bleu has been lobbying Twitter for several years to remove CSE material extensively, and until the Elon Musk acquisition, Twitter was slow to remove most of the content. I told Teslarati She is happy to see the new changes the platform is implementing under the new leadership of Elon Musk.

She noted that under the new leadership, Twitter “takes child exploitation very seriously”. However, there is still much work to be done. There is an ongoing lawsuit against the social media platform that started before Elon Musk bought it. The plaintiffs, John Doe 1 and John Doe 2, were minors who had been subjected to sexual exploitation, and videos of that exploitation were posted on Twitter. When the two, now adults, begged Twitter to remove the content, Twitter refused.

The content that the plaintiffs wanted removed from Twitter had more than 167,000 views and 2,223 retweets.

Blue pointed to some of the major changes Twitter has made under his new leadership. The first changes were in the reporting system. In a thread of tweets, Bleu made suggestions for Twitter, and so far, the platform has implemented two of those suggestions. The first is clear and easy reporting. Twitter has implemented two-click reporting for children who report their abuse material.

Bleu indicated that there should be a separate tab for sexually exploited adults as well. “It should be absolutely clear to both adults and children who are being sexually exploited, and the reporting options should be separate.”

Another major issue that the platform is notably working on is removing hashtags that are known to be used for CSE selling. These are well-known hashtags that are used for CSE trading on the platform. In the video below, attorneys Lisa Hapa and Peter Gintala, the attorneys representing John Doe 1 and John Doe 2, explain how to use these tags.

These hashtags were mentioned in the lawsuit and Teslarati Check them to see if the platform is actually removing the content. We found that Twitter removes most of the content; However, there are still accounts that post content requests.

The screenshot below shows that Twitter removed content from the Recent tabs for one of these hashtags. The Photos and Videos tabs were also empty. However, the Top Tweets section still contains requests for CSE and uses many other tags. Unfortunately, some of these signs are still very active. Blue noted that predators will continue to post with a variety of tags, but the tags can help authorities catch criminals — which is one reason Teslarati Do not post tags.

in her tweet threadBleu pointed out that some brands outside the top three are actively involved in sharing and spreading illegal content. Blue said Teslarati Twitter’s new sense of urgency makes her an optimist.

“After years of advocating for minor survivors on Twitter, I wasn’t as optimistic as I am now. I don’t expect perfection from a platform. All I wanted was to see a sense of urgency around such a serious matter. In many of these cases, this is a matter of life or A death for every victim, so every second counts.”

Bleu’s suggestion for Twitter is to continue to prioritize CSE content removal, go through the reporting, bypass all reporting backlogs, and work alongside the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. She added that Twitter should innovate around this problem using all available technologies.

“There are a lot of free technologies out there that are being used by platforms and they’ve had a lot of success,” added Blue. Her final request to Twitter and Elon Musk is to “address this issue on a large scale without violating the digital privacy rights of innocent citizens.”
