Alec Baldwin Celebrates First Anniversary of Halina Hutchins’ Death in Tragedy “Rust”

Alec Baldwin pays tribute to Helena Hutchins one year after her death in Rust shooting.

The 64-year-old actor — who was training with a prop gun in the New Mexico movie when he went out and killed the cinematographer — posted a photo of Hutchins at work operating a movie camera.

He captioned the photo, “One year ago today…”.

On October 21, 2021, Baldwin, the actor and producer on the Western movie, was practicing kinship drawing at a church on Bonanza Creek Ranch outside Santa Fe in New Mexico. He claimed he was told it was a “cold pistol” that did not contain ammunition, but that it was unloaded and contained a live bullet. The projectile penetrated Hutchins near her shoulder and continued up to director Joel Sousa. Hutchins fell to the ground and crew members rushed to her aid, followed by paramedics. Hutchins was taken to the hospital by helicopter but died of her injuries at the age of 42. Souza was treated and recovered.

There have been countless reports of alleged safety issues on the set of the low-budget film. Baldwin denied responsibility for Hutchins’ death and asserted that he aimed the gun but did not pull the trigger. An FBI forensic report stated that the gun could not be fired without pulling the trigger. Criminal charges remain with the local prosecutor’s office.

“In memory of the tragedy on Rust Filmed in Santa Fe County, County District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altois remains committed to seeking justice for victims and getting answers to the community,” Heather Brewer, a spokeswoman for the New Mexico District Attorney’s Office of the First District, told Fox News Friday. Once the county attorney receives the full report from the Mayor of Santa Fe County, she and her team of professional attorneys and investigators will thoroughly review all evidence and make an informed decision about whether to press charges against those involved. No one is above the law and every victim deserves justice.”

Rust The investigative case file is under final review by the mayor’s office prior to submission to the Santa Fe District Attorney. We don’t have a specific date for when this will happen. Other than this information, our agency has no further comment.”

On Thursday, it was announced Rust — which will resume production in January — will not be filmed in New Mexico, as detectives continue to piece together the tragic events of that day.

“Production is considering other locations, including in California, but no decisions have been made,” attorney Melina Spadoni said in a statement on behalf of Rust Movie Productions.

The fact that the film ever resumes production is recent news. He paused for about a year, and announced on October 5 that a settlement had been reached in a civil lawsuit between Baldwin, Rust The producers and the Hutchins family, including her husband Matthew and their young son. As part of the agreement, the film has been lit for resumption in January, and Matthew is set to serve as executive producer.

The DA office was quick to add that the settlement “has no bearing” on potential criminal charges. Carmack-Altweis and her team are considering charges against up to four people, including Baldwin, noted in an August letter she wrote requesting emergency funding to cover potential trial costs. But the investigation, conducted by the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, continues with a focus on how live ammunition got into the group. Baldwin, film shield Hannah Gutierrez Reid, assistant director Dave Holz and director of support Sarah Zachary were among those interviewed by investigators. The Long Colt .45 pistol was sent to the FBI’s Forensic Laboratory for testing; Aldwin’s mobile phone records were obtained and analyzed.

When it was announced Rust Production will resume, Baldwin said he was “delighted” with the development, adding, “Throughout this challenging process, everyone has maintained the specific desire to do what is best for Halina’s son. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to resolving this tragic and painful situation.”

Baldwin previously said that Hutchins “was my friend. The day I got to Santa Fe to start filming, I took her to dinner with Joel.” [Souza]. We were a very good crew, we were shooting a movie together and then this terrible event happened.”

He also paid tribute to her at his infamous ABC News session in December when he first broke his silence on the tragedy. He said he “loved working with this woman. It was a joy. Everyone loved her as a person. Everyone admired her talent.”

Baldwin explained to outlets his account of what happened that day. He said he and Hutchins closed the scene, who saw his character injured and trapped while pointing his weapon against two opponents. He said he was told he had a cool gun and Hutchins directed his every move to get the best camera angles.

“It’s all in its direction,” he claimed. “[Hutchins] He tells me, ‘Put the gun low. Go to your right. Well, there it is. Well, do it. Now show it a little less. …she instructs me how she wants me to hold the gun from this angle. I grabbed the pistol where she asked me to hold it, and it ended up shooting right under her armpit.”

Baldwin insisted, “I didn’t pull the trigger…I fire the gun. I go, ‘Can you see that?” Can you see that? Can you see that? Then I let go of the hammer of the gun, and the gun went off. I let go of the gun’s hammer, and the gun exploded. “

At that moment, he said, there was an explosion and everyone was terrified and shocked. Baldwin saw Hutchins coming down and thought, “Did she faint? The idea of a live round in that gun didn’t cross my mind until perhaps 45 minutes to an hour later.”

Baldwin said the group was evacuated because paramedics Hutchins and Sousa were tending to them, and that he and other crew members fixed their eyes on the emergency helicopter that arrived about 30 minutes later. He met with the mayors shortly afterwards and they showed him a photo of a bullet that had been removed from Sousa – and told him that Hutchins had not survived.
