Fifteen years ago, Disney enchanted viewers by sending them their catalog of films with fascinatedAnd now his director is talking about the challenges of making the film — and his surprise at not being asked to work on the new sequel. Frustrating.

Over the years, the script has been rewritten, and directors like Rob Marshall, John Turteltab, and Adam Shankman were in talks to helm the project before Kevin Lima came on board. Lima had a long history with the company as an animator, working on character designs for the little Mermaid And the Beauty and the beast and as a storyboard artist Aladdin before going for guidance goofy movie And the 102 dalmatians. Says THR This is his playground fascinated The film has been described as a “love letter to Disney,” not the more pessimistic version that was in the works.
The studio was looking to cast an established star as the lead, Lima recalls. But he pushed for Amy Adams, even before the 2005 drama was released junebug, which would provide her a breakthrough and her first Academy Award nomination. He also recalls that the studio was “very nervous” about the film, with some individuals at Disney expressing concerns that the film would only appeal to girls. “The marketing department didn’t have confidence that the movie was worth shooting,” says Lima. “They didn’t think the boys were going to go see this movie, and the marketing department did their best to shut the movie down a few times while we were in pre-production. A decade and a half later, the movie spawned a sequel Frustrating, premiering this month on Disney+ with all of the lead characters reprising their roles — but Shankman has replaced Lima in the director’s chair. says about Frustrating. “It was a very sad turn. I haven’t seen the movie. I haven’t read the script. So I’m going to experience the characters I helped create, grow and live through as the audience does.”
