Do you think Marie Seuss will go too far? Lauren Chen reveals why they weren’t

Mary Sues makes terrible heroes and really ruins any story they’re in. But that doesn’t mean they still don’t have a fan base. And Lauren Chen found a thread on Twitter with some tantalizing responses revealing why Mary Sue isn’t going away anytime soon.

in Video posted on MediaHolk’s YouTube channel On December 8, Chen highlighted A Twitter thread by user @JoshuaLisec which provided an explanation for why the Mary Sue characters didn’t work. The thread also specified characters such as Galadriel from rings of powerand Rey from the Star Wars series, and Captain Marvel from its movie called Mary Sues.

Lisk’s interpretation is fairly harmless. He clearly explains (as have others) why heroes who don’t have personal flaws or challenges to overcome don’t work, and why they cause the story to fail from the start. (This is why the aforementioned stories fail with their female leads.) However, as lousy as it all was, the thread (unsurprisingly) received some harsh responses.

“But what I thought was just as interesting as the posts responding to in a shockingly negative way,” Chen said in her video. “Because honestly, whether or not you agree with Joshua that characters like Ray are poorly written, I feel like it’s very hard to call him sexist for his opinion.” However, that is exactly what happened on the internet dot com.”

She then cited the chain of responses to Lysek’s tweet where users seem to take exception to what he wrote. Indeed, respondents sometimes resorted to calling it “fragile” and so on. Overall, these comments were quite typical of the types of comments seen regularly on Twitter. For her part, Chen went into detail about why there is no error in Lysek’s thread.

“It’s not misogynistic or misogynistic to look at a character — a fictional character — and say, ‘Well, you don’t seem to have any flaws or weaknesses. So, I don’t see how you can grow into a story.

“It’s not fanatical hatred or rejection of women as people to look at Ray from star Wars And, she says, “The fact that they were so strong in the beginning, it kind of seems like their main goal was just desire fulfillment or self-incorporation,” she added. “It’s funny because although feminists were upset about Joshua’s thread, some of them confirmed it at the same time.”

Chen was later martyred tweet By usertommy_stella To which he said, “I don’t want to actually jump into the Mary Sue speech . . . but I do want to say I don’t care if it’s a Mary Sue, I don’t care if a grown man thinks she’s a well-written character, I care about this:”

I then attach a montage of pictures of young girls, some dressed as Ray, meeting adults (one or more who may have been Ray’s original actress Daisy Ridley) who are also dressed as Ray. Chen found it quite telling.

Again, this goes back to the idea that the main purpose of storytelling nowadays is simply to represent oneself. It’s only a good story if you can see yourself in it. That’s why we have to have all of these diverse rations. What these people don’t get is that you don’t need to share characteristics with the character in order to see yourself as they are,” she said.

“I think it’s cute to have young girls like Rae wearing her clothes,” Chen added. “But let’s face it, they’re also several other characters who aren’t women and it’s actually really well written that little girls dress up as well.”

She continued, “Personally, as someone who has had a daughter and was once a little girl, I’d rather look for a character like Aragorn who is a man though I am not, if only because he displays so much virtue.”

Expanded on the difference between the Lord of the Rings personal f star Wars Letter. “He has experiences to overcome. He doesn’t want to be king but he has to grow in that role. Instead of just siding with Ray because, ‘Oh, she’s a woman, and I’m a woman too.'”

Ultimately, Chen’s Mediaholic video shows that while Mary Sue’s characters are terrible, there are still plenty of people who actually love them. Most importantly, as Hollywood has made clear, Mary Souse has the support of the people who matter most: those responsible for crafting stories that reach the widest audience.

So star Wars Mary Sues will continue to feature. The MCU will continue to introduce Mary Sues. Reboots of franchises that people love that didn’t have a Mary Sweeze in the original will continue to feature the Mary Sweeze in its new incarnations. And every other story in every other medium of the old entertainment system will continue to feature the Mary Sues.

Every now and then news comes out that Hollywood has had enough of people who don’t like mindful entertainment, and that it will do things differently moving forward. But that simply won’t happen. The people who run Tinseltown, and the nation as a whole, stand by their beliefs and won’t change. And Lauren Chen’s Mediaholic video is a good reminder of that.
