Jennifer College coffee broken maker. The actress calls from her New Orleans home, and she can’t automatically make it work. “I hope you don’t think I’m an amoeba because I don’t have a personality,” says Coolidge, 61, deciding to go through the interview without caffeine. “We have already postponed this with you, and I don’t want to be a pain in the ass. So I will do it with my low energy.”
In theory, Coolidge could go to her local coffee shop, but she’s very popular for that now. As Tanya in white lotus – which aired its second season on October 30 – in addition to the role of Karen in Ryan Murphy the observer, Coolidge has finally transcended from lovable actress to her rightful place as an actress good well star. Even after her famous roles as Bullitt Legally BlondeStifler’s mother american pieHilary Duff’s wicked stepmother in it Cinderella story, and several Christopher Guest movies, she can still go out and drink coffee. Not anymore.
“I can’t walk in a bathrobe,” she said in her signature half-whisper. “I miss the days when you were anonymous, where you could just throw on a weird hat and walk in there. I can’t do that. You have to comb your hair and put on makeup. You have to put it together. How boring!”
How was the reception? white lotus the second season?
I think it’s very difficult to do a season like white lotus [Season] was one. When something is this unexpected success and then there is pressure to match it…[but] I think she did a good job. I’m not one of those people who really looks for numbers. I don’t want to jinx. It’s that thing that you don’t want to read the comments about because it makes you feel self-conscious.
Especially since you won an Emmy for your work in the first season.
It compresses, right? But I am glad to be back on this show. Who doesn’t love [showrunner] Mike White? He did a great job choosing the actors white lotus two. Found these great actors [Michael Imperioli, Aubrey Plaza, Laura Dern] And he really knows how to tell a great story. He knows how to get your attention. Most of all, he writes things that others don’t.
At what point did you realize the show was taking off?
There was no sign of it until it collided. There were moments when I wasn’t surprised, but the acting that was happening made me think, “This might be good.” But I didn’t feel like it was something a lot of people would watch, because even though it was a great story, I didn’t know if people were going to get everything Mike had to say. I really underestimated the audience, and I was very surprised when it turned out to be such a huge thing.
It’s so funny, my neighbors in New Orleans were getting dressed up and having these viewing parties white lotus. They all appeared in Hawaiian shirts and dresses. This was a really good sign.
Are they still dressed up for Season 2?
Halloween was just another night. I usually have this big party with 150 people, but I have to keep the number really low. I think it was 50 this year. The same group of neighbors came. One of them was dressed as an Emmy speech. There was a girl getting dressed up for me and she found a dress that looked exactly like the one I wore at the Emmy Awards. Then another man came as a lavender bath. When people put in an effort like that, you really can’t fake that enthusiasm.
The bathroom is very neat. What was this outfit like?
It was amazing. He built this little bathtub, and later he had lavender and white balloons for a lavender bubble bath. The lavender bath was better than I’ve had. Bath salts don’t really make bubbles, but they were pretty clever.
What did you wear like?
Well, you see, I’m not Heidi Klum. I don’t have time to come up with a great costume. I came in this huge wig. People are like, “What are you?” I have no idea what this is. But it’s very difficult to throw this Halloween party. I don’t have time to show up as a worm or whatever. I loved Heidi’s outfit. It’s very unexpected: one of the most beautiful girls in the world comes in the form of a worm. I love him.
Do you keep Amy at home?
I do. It’s in my house in Los Angeles, and I have this painting of this woman from the 1930s over a fireplace. If Amy pays for the painting, it looks like she’s holding it. When I bought it from the old man, he said it was an actress. So it’s great. It’s as if an actress got it from another generation.
Mike said he wrote Tanya with you in mind. Where is Tanya now, how do you relate to her?
I hope to be prettier than Tanya. But as far as my identity is concerned, I think my naivety has been quite a parallel. Certainly at this point, I’m not half naive as me [once] I was. This just got me into all sorts of problems. I don’t want to use the word “tired”, but I’m more careful being older and so much more, what is the opposite of gullible? I am more discerning. It’s that thing. When you meet a security guard and you try to get in somewhere, he hears every story and gives you the look, “You don’t stand a chance.” I’m not the security guard who’s been doing this for 20 years. I’m the security guard who’s been doing this for a few years now.
Fans have called this moment in your career a renaissance. How was that for you?
Maybe the Renaissance thing comes from two shows around the same time – the Ryan Murphy show, observerIt was quite advanced white lotus two. In a way, that created some momentum.
How often are you stopped in public now?
It has really increased. It just goes to show you the power of TV. Lots of people know who you are because [American Pie]. You get on a plane and people will say, “Oh, I’m sitting next to Stifler’s mom,” or whatever. People get to know you, even if you’ve done a movie a long time ago. But somehow the combination of these two shows made it overnight…everyone knows me by now.
I feel like this new generation – Ariana Grande’s generation – loves me more than the first. Somehow I click with them better. They are much younger than me, though. Maybe it’s all social media, but they imitate me on TikTok, a lot of imitators are very good. Ariana, just a few days ago, I played my character, Sherry Ann Capote The best on offer. It was on the spot. Every nuance got hit in the eyes.
Did you tell Ariana how much you loved her?
naturally. I couldn’t believe it, and so many people sent it to me. They say, “I got close to you, Jennifer. It’s you.”
She’s also starting to be better known for roles, like Tanya, or playing Carey Mulligan’s mom. young promising, which allows you to do more serious drama. What caused this transformation?
Mike White gets a lot of credit. He’s the guy who took a big risk on me. Nobody really did that.
[And] I suspect young promising Things helped. Thank goodness for Emerald Fennell. I got the ball rolling. You can’t be underestimated — if you were to say, “Jennifer, what do you think has changed your life in such a short amount of time?” I would say Emerald Vinyl, by far. This small role somehow got things going.
And obviously before Emerald Vinyl, Ariana Grande was putting me in her video [for “Thank U, Next”], which was just a complete coincidence. Suddenly someone is pouring gasoline on this little fire, and the next thing you know, you have a different life.
How do you think your life would be different if you had gained all this fame early on?
This is very interesting. I don’t know who I will be now. If you want to hear an honest answer, I’d say I’d rather end my life with some great stuff than have it happen in my thirties and then fade away. But I have to say, I found funny clips from some of the shows I did in my early thirties, and some comedic things that I did. And I remember thinking, “Oh, I must have sucked it.” But looking at it at that age, I was like, “I wasn’t bad and I was really skinny and I was so cute and nobody wanted me.” It’s weird how I had more physically. But who knows why things didn’t happen after that The best in the show or any of these things. Better to seal with a bang on the contrary.
In the 1980s, I worked with Sandra Bullock at a New York restaurant called Canastel’s. Was she good at her job?
It’s so funny because two of these waitresses from 1983 were at my Halloween party. But Sandra was the host and I was the cocktail waitress. Then, in the end, I wasn’t following my seizures very much. I was going out to town and I wasn’t very good at it. So Sandra ended up getting cocktail fits. She was very knit, very beautiful girl. Things were already brewing. She had things going.
How many times have you seen Legally Blonde?
yes. Maybe once. Sometimes, when you do a movie and you go to a premiere, they say, “Jennifer, we have a seat for you in the audience.” So you really have to watch the movie, and everyone else is watching you too. If you are in someone’s house and Legally Blonde Running, I’ll watch everyone else’s sights. Reese broke up. But I literally feel so sad if I have to watch anything I’m into at all. Just don’t want to see it. I do the job and that’s it.
But I met a guy, who was a hotel teacher in San Francisco and he said, “I just want to tell you something. Every night after my shift, I go home and my mom and I watch. Legally Blonde. ‘ And I said, ‘Oh that’s so cute. But not every night, you don’t.” Then he said, “No, no, every night I come home really, and you stay up for me. This is what we are watching.” I am very happy that the film brought so much joy to people.
What is the best part of success?
People think they’ll have a good experience with me because I’ve played a lot of underdogs. I love that. I haven’t played a lot of bad guys. People who don’t know you invite you to things because they know you’re not a serial killer or something. I feel like I would never have a problem if my car broke down. Someone will say, “Oh my God, get in the car. We’ll take you to a gas station.”
What do you do to relax?
My dog loves my bed and I love my bed and I like… to lie in my bed [laughs]. I know a lot of people are like, “Well, I love surfing, it makes me feel good.” But for me, it does not involve any kind of sports. It’s just going to bed and watching movies if I can make the TV work. This is my favourite.
What is your fitness regime like?
I don’t really have any system. In New Orleans, I have these very steep stairs that I go up and down 100 times a day. I feel this really helps.
What’s the most lenient purchase you’ve ever made?
this house. I don’t have kids, so I think it’s like a kid who needs a lot of attention. You have to feed him. There are a lot of errors. It is an old house. Constantly needs attention. So it’s not buying a contract or something, but it’s definitely the most lenient because of all the money I invested in it. It never ends. The house became a business.
What advice would you like to give your younger self?
be patient. If someone isn’t nice to you, believe it. I always feel like I’ve been in denial. For whatever reason, I’m still hanging out. I don’t know what this is, but I just couldn’t believe they didn’t like me.
I’ll let you go and get your coffee.
