Mid-gen PS5/XSX upgrades should be in the hands of AAA Studios soon, says GTA Leaker

Mid-Gen console upgrades became a thing with the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X, which introduced 4K support for console games albeit with some limitations (PS4 Pro games, for example, often use chessboard rendering or viewing games only when 1440 pixels before upgrading).

For the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S generation | X, the feasibility of the Mid-Gen upgrades seemed less clear. As explained two years ago by former Xbox CEO Albert Pinello, there’s no need to keep up with high-resolution displays this time around.

It may also be less necessary. 4K has become a mainstream resolution for computers and televisions, and basic consoles are designed around 1080p (or less) output. When you have a group that requires 4x performance *only* to drive 4x pixels, you gobble up all the performance just with driving precision. I think we’re unlikely to see 8K TV move into the mainstream in the same way we saw 4K become mainstream – we’re likely to see improvements in NITS (to improve HDR) or better frames to support over 60fps on TVs. Next-generation CPUs and GPUs should easily support higher frame rates and wider colors. So mid-generation upgrades are not only less financially and technically viable but also likely less necessary to keep up with display technologies.

However, earlier this year, popular monitor manufacturer TCL Technology frankly discussed the upcoming Mid-Gen upgrades in 2023 or 2024. At the time, it was often taken as market speculation, though it’s hard to imagine they didn’t talk to a certain level An insight into the future.

Today, the rumors about Mid-Gen upgrades are back in full force thanks to Tez2, the popular GTA leaker who first revealed that Rockstar Games has canceled its Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto IV scheme due to poor reception of GTA: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition. Kotaku then confirmed this rumor as well.

A few hours ago, Tez2 wrote the following post on GTAForums:

Most AAA studios should have received their development kits for midlife upgrades or should have them by the start of the new year.

He later confirmed that this was based on actual information and not a guess. If so, Mid-Gen Upgrades for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S | The X could be released in late 2023. This will track with the previous generation, with the PlayStation 4 Pro launching three years after the PlayStation 4, while the Xbox One X launched a year later.

It’s too early to talk in depth about the specs, but an easy prediction is that both Sony and Microsoft will use a dedicated GPU based on the RDNA 3 architecture due to be released before the end of the year on PC. AMD is set to reveal RDNA 3 to the world on November 3. So far, these major features and improvements have been confirmed:

  • 5nm process node
  • Advanced chiplet packaging
  • Revisited unit of account
  • Enhanced graphics pipeline
  • The next generation of AMD Infinity cache
  • Improved ray tracing capabilities
  • Polished adaptive power management
  • >50% Perf/Watt vs RDNA 2

Stay tuned for more news, rumors, and leaks about Mid-Gen upgrades as they become available.
