Watch faces that allow people to set pictures of their family and friends are very popular. Before the Pixel Watch, Google Photos is preparing to support such an integration.
About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” post, we have unpacked the latest version of an app that Google has uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APK files, in the case of Android apps), we can see different lines of code within this hint in possible future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not ship these features at all, and our interpretation of what they are may be incomplete. We will try to enable those who are about to finish, however, to show you what they would look like if they did charge. With that in mind, keep reading.
Several threads in Google Photos 6.8 for Android describe “photos_watchface_preview” that allows you to “select watch face photos”. This seems to be more than just setting a single picture as your watch face wallpaper. For example, Samsung’s Galaxy Wearable app is already showing up as a sharing target in Google Photos.

Instead, you’ll be able to select multiple photos, and the watch face is supposed to rotate through the photos throughout the day. Google Photos will impose a limit on the number of photos that can be added to a watch face.
You have already set the maximum number of images (%d). Remove some selected photos to add more.
This is supposed to be for the Pixel watch, but it could also be for other Wear OS 3 devices at some point as nothing suggests it’s exclusive to the Google wearable. The exact setup user interface is not yet clear.
Google has a wide range of watch faces planned for Pixel Watch that span both analog and digital styles. Meanwhile, adding Google Photos integration is a good indication of company-wide support for the Pixel watch. Another useful shortcut can be the quick watch face generator in the “Use as” menu in Google Photos that is already used to set device wallpapers (and contact photos).
However, it is interesting that Wear OS does not have a default photo gallery app compared to Apple watchOS or Samsung, which have added their own apps.
Thanks to JEB Decompiler, which some APK Insight decompilers take advantage of.
